After a week of intense build-up with last-minute course changes and the Welsh weather playing its usual part, the Dyfi Valley was graced with clean conditions and Red Bull Hardline went off with a bang. Adam Brayton had a flat in qualifying and was the first to drop in, putting down a rowdy run that booked him a lengthy stay in the hot seat. It wasn't until we were well into the top ten qualifiers that Matteo Iniquez was able to dislodge Brayton with a loose and fast run that was on pace with Ronan Dunne's fastest qualifier. Sebastian Holguin, one of the two Columbian urban DH specialists in attendance had a wild ride to cross the line in second behind Iniquez at the time, but he was probably more stoked on just having survived a few hairy moments in his run - including casing the two 90-footers. Charlie Hatton, repping the UCI rainbow stripes as becomes the reigning UCI World Champion, used all his racing know-how to put together a clean and fast run taking another 1.2 seconds off Matteo's time. Short-lived joy for Charlie though as Juanfer Velez, the 2nd urban DH destroyer from Columbia in the start list, threw everything at the course to take ANOTHER second off the clock! From street racing to the world downhill scene, you'd have to think that a big factory ride is in the future for Juanfer. However, on the day, there were a couple of heavy hitters left in the start hut. Bernard Kerr wanted his Hardline crown back, and despite going down by over 1 second through the first splits he crossed the line 0.9 up after a fantastic lower half. Ultimately though, he had no answer for Ronan Dunne. The young Irishman won Hardline last year, won the his first World Cup just a couple of weeks ago, and he signed another impressive victory here today with a time that can't be argued with. Ronan has well and truly arrived!
